Though Budapest is a beautiful city, one thing it is sorely lacking is hospitality. Having gone to 4 restaurants in Budapest let us offer you these tips if you ever find yourself dining in this country:
1. Whatever time you think you meal will take, use that as a starting point and multiply it by 3 (ie 1 hour meal = takes 3 hours)
- Waiters are notoriously slow, and literally hide from you when you try to hail them down. Additionally, they ignore simple requests like "check please" ... by stating "one minute" only to disappear for 30 minutes.
2. If you want a particular dish be ready to defend your choice.
- Waiters at times refuse to serve you the food you want to order. For example yesterday at a nice local restaurant, the waiter flat out refused to serve me a dish because he thought it did not go with the rest of my meal (what doesn't go well with potatoes and meat?)
3. If you want a complete meal, make sure to order double of everything
- In Budapest only half of your order ever gets brought out. If you try to ask where it is, the waiter will state thats its still being made. Even then the chances that it will ever get to the table is 50-50.
